Almost every CPU, video card or laptop nowadays comes with a tool to choose from different performance profiles. This is done, for example, on the basis of clock speed or TDP. Microsoft will add these functions in a standardized way to Settings in Windows 11.
There will be a new screen in the Settings app where, for example, the TDP of the processor can be adjusted downwards or upwards. A Microsoft spokesperson told Tweakers this during a demonstration of the Nvidia RTX Spark processors at Computex. However, the new settings screen will also be available for other hardware, such as those from Qualcomm and AMD, he assured us.
RTX Spark CPUs are adjustable via OS
The immediate reason is that Nvidia's RTX Spark processors will not use a separate software package or driver. Microsoft and Nvidia say they have worked closely together to ensure that the new CPUs work well under Windows. Because Nvidia wants to give laptop users a choice of different performance profiles, Microsoft has added this feature to Windows.
During the demonstration it was not yet possible to view the new settings panel. It shows the TDP of the processor and that of the RTX Sparks has not yet been officially announced. The screen would already be available in internal test versions of the OS.
Software packages from manufacturers will soon be redundant?
Choosing from multiple performance profiles is the main function of many software packages that manufacturers include with their hardware, especially laptops. Examples include ASUS Armory Crate and Lenovo Vantage. Integration into Windows may make these redundant for many users.
Microsoft will probably roll out the new settings screen for the TDP profiles sometime in the coming months, because the first RTX Spark laptops will appear in the fall.
