"Climate Change and Global Governance" International Polar Summer School — Season 3: Iceland Searching for Truth, Exploring the Arctic

Time: 2026-03-26

Climate change was never a single-State challenge, but a global issue of concern to the survival of human civilization. In the discourse of global governance, addressing climate change has long gone beyond the realm of environmental issues and has become a central issue in measuring the responsibility of States to assume responsibilities that affect the destiny of humankind. The University is committed to cross-fertilization with the dominant disciplines and is actively involved in international cooperation in the field of sustainable development, such as polar exploration, building on the three categories of “academic innovatorship, excellence in engineering and cross-composite talent” and focusing on the development of a social home that can serve as a future for national renewal. Liang and the professional elite ... interpret the responsibilities of the great Powers with practical action, promote the improvement of the global climate governance system in the international arena and contribute to the fight against climate change through China ' s wisdom, Chinese programmes and Chinese power.

In July 2024, the first Polar Summer School “Climate Change and Global Governance” conducted a 12-day scientific study tour on the theme “Road Norway, explore the Arctic”, strengthening multidisciplinary cross-cutting research in the area of climate change and global governance, enhancing students' capacity for innovative thinking and promoting collaboration and exchange between students and scientists in both countries. In July 2025, 20 talented students from the second summer school joined the Norwegian practice team to Iceland and Greenland. The 14-day journey revolves around the core areas of polar construction, oceans, geology, ecology and the environment, exploring the polar landscape and seeking scientific knowledge between the ice sheet and the oceans. The same students look at ways to combat climate change with the extreme secret of their steps, reflect in depth on the propositions of global governance, and write polar exploration stories that belong to their fellow human beings in the polar landscape.

In 2026, the Graduate School, the National Institute of Excellence for Engineers will continue to launch the third International Polar Summer School on Climate Change and Global Governance, in conjunction with undergraduate colleges, external offices, scientific associations and related disciplines, and teachers and students will again travel to the mysterious island countries of the North Atlantic at the end of the world — Iceland, the Central Ice Arctic scientific expedition, Greenland — to continue to focus on the related fields of polar ecology, polar oceans, polar construction, polar transport, polar health, polar law, polar policy.

The summer school was completely upgraded and received full support from the Chinese Polar Research Centre. The project is aligned with the national strategic plan for polar development of the “Fifty-Fifty Five” and is aligned with the major international scientific plans of the United Nations Decade of Scientific Action for the Freeze Circles (2025-2034) and the Fifth International Polar Year (IPY5, 2032-2033). The participants will participate in a wide range of academic activities such as field study, outdoor camping, scientific research, site studies, expert reports, round-table discussions, and subject research, led by senior professors of relevant disciplines in China-ice and China.

1. The best full-time undergraduate, master ' s and doctoral students (non-leaving grades) at my school give priority to students of scientific potential, mentor support and the National Institute of Excellence for Engineers.

2. The leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the socialist path of Chinese identity are good in terms of political thought, moral conduct, academic integrity, physical and mental health.

3. A combination of excellent performances and a solid professional base during school years has good development and scientific potential. The level of foreign languages is good, they are better adapted to the international multicultural environment, and they have greater international communication and teamwork.

4. During the school year, scientific research is mainly carried out in areas related to the polar environment and sustainable development. Recruitment is mainly conducted for students working in the polar environment in specialized colleges such as the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, the Civil Engineering Institute, the Institute of Surveying and Geographic Information, the Institute of Marine and Earth Sciences, the Institute of Transport Engineering, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Law, the School of Political and International Relations, the School of Architecture and City Planning, the Faculty of Life Sciences, the Academy of Arts and Media and the Institute of Design and Creative Studies, but is not limited to the above-mentioned colleges and disciplines. Students with relevant research orientations or experience with highly relevant research participation, such as artificial intelligence, life and health, civil and maritime ports, are encouraged to apply.

5. A high degree of responsibility and collective awareness, strong initiative and internal drive.

6. The mentors, undergraduates, and their respective colleges agree that the end-of-cycle arrangements must be reasonably planned and that they can participate on schedule.

The summer school will travel to Iceland, the Central-Ice Arctic Scientific Research Station, Greenland to cooperate and interact with local institutions of higher learning and scientific research institutions, and to conduct scientific research in the form of a group of participants, who will be required to participate in all aspects of the study and to prepare research topics in accordance with the programme of activities, as well as to present summaries of activities, project presentations and practical reports.

General programme of activities (specific to be issued):

In March-April 2026, project personnel recruited, organized and selected experts, established a list of participants and identified the accompanying teachers.

In May-August 2026, participated in academic seminars on polar research, research topics, background information collection, pilot design, etc. Sending missions, participating in pre-mobilization meetings, etc.

22 August-4 September 2026 (tentative).

Applicants are required to submit their application by 17 p.m. on 3 April (Friday) and undergraduate and post-graduate materials are submitted to Teacher Qiu of the College Integrated Office (House and Building 1501). The application includes:

(1) Registration Form for Summer Schools on Climate Change and Global Governance (available on the Graduate School website for downloading and filling in: https://gs.tongji.edu.cn/info/1092/4161.htm, signed by a mentor and college);

(2) Presentations on topics or projects related to polar-related studies, proposed missions to Iceland, Central-ictic scientific research stations, and the concept of studies conducted in Greenland (approximately 1,000 words);

(3) The personal history profile (up to two pages of A4 paper);

(4) A copy of the report card from the undergraduate to the latest semester shall be stamped on the undergraduate or postgraduate school;

(5) Copies of relevant certificates reflecting the highest level of personal foreign language (e.g. Ass, Tofu, etc.);

(6) Relevant certificates reflecting the highest academic level of the individual (e.g. award-winning certificates, representational papers, certificates of participation, etc.).

(7) Evidence of participation in relevant experiences such as innovation practices and competitions.

The above information should be arranged sequentially in a tulip clip and completed on-line questionnaires (https://v.wjx.cn/vm/tLDCD5d.aspx#) and the application submitted to the responsible teacher ' s office after his or her mentor and the institute has signed the agreement.
