Computex: Future router: Asus introduces the first Wi-Fi-8 router

Authors

Manufacturers prepare for the next generation of Wi-Fi 8 alias IEEE 802.11bn. In front: Asus with his high-end router ROG Rapture GT-BN98 Pro. With four radio modules, including two in the 6-GHz band, it is intended to stimulate the possibilities of Wi-Fi 8 . In addition, there are Ethernet connections that transmit up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbit/s).

Strong Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi 8 maintains the maximum speed of Wi-Fi 7. In the case of the ROG Rapture GT-BN98 Pro, the 11.5 Gbit/s in the 6-GHz band corresponds to a channel width of 320 MHz. This is already 23 Gbit/s and with the two bands at 5 and 2.4 GHz Asus lands at 30 Gbit/s. All tapes run with four MIMO streams each. Broadcom supplies the necessary chips. With 2 GB RAM and 256 MByte NAND flash, buffer is available on the storage side.

Pleasant: The ROG Rapture GT-BN98 Pro supports Multi-Link Operation (MLO) across all bands to increase speed. Wi-Fi 8 enhances connection stability and spectrum efficiency. In multi-family houses, for example, routers can better get out of the way when sparking.

As with any new WLAN generation, new routers are an investment in the future: In order to be able to exploit the functions, it also needs new clients. Smartphones or notebooks, for example, must master Wi-Fi 8 in order to be able to inspire stability advantages.

10-Gbit/s Ethernet

The ROG Rapture GT-BN98 Pro takes over the connections from its Wi-Fi-7 predecessor ROG Rapture GT-BE98 Pro. Of the seven Ethernet ports, two to 10 Gbit/s, four 2.5 Gbit/s and one Gbit/s are transmitted. A 10- and 2.5-Gbit/s connection can be configured as a WAN connection (Wide Area Network) to connect a modem. The router itself does not integrate.

Asus acquires a 10-gbit/s port as a gaming port. The router prioritises the traffic over it without having to adjust the firmware.

Printers and storage media run on two USB ports. One of them creates 5 Gbit/s (USB 3.2 Gen 1, formerly called USB 3.0), the other only 480 Mbit/s (USB 2.0). The power supply is connected externally.

)Europe follows

Asus wants to first trade the ROG Rapture GT-BN98 Pro in North America; Europe will follow later. In view of the current GT-BE98 (not Pro), prices beyond the 500 euros are to be expected. The GT-BE98 has a single 6- and two 5-GHz modules instead of the reversed configuration. The Pro version is currently not available.
