Cooler Master equips its new modular MWE Gold V4 power supply with 'GPU Shield technology. This must monitor power consumption and warn users of abnormal values. This would make the power supply better protected against burning 12Vhpwr plugs.
The MWE Gold V4 is the first Cooler Master power supply to monitor per pin whether the current limit is exceeded. If the power supply measures too much current, more than 9A per pin, the power is significantly reduced. If that doesn't solve the problem, the power supply will turn off the power completely after three minutes and a red light will come on.
According to Cooler Master, this should prevent the power connector from melting. After all, that remains a risk with some RTX video cards, such as the 5090 and 4090. However, the preventive measures do reduce performance. For example, with the RTX 5090, the power drops from 600W to 450W during overload.
Three models of the MWE Gold V4 power supply with 80 PLUS Gold certificate will be available, with the most expensive model having a power of up to 1000W and a suggested retail price of $160. No European prices have been announced yet. It is also not clear when the power supplies will be released.
For power supplies that do not have this built-in technology, Cooler Master comes with an additional dongle. Users can place this between their GPU and PSU and it makes noise if too much current flows through the cable.
