Developers now have to pay 10.99 euros per month for Strava-api

Authors

Strava makes developers pay to use its API. Previously, developers could access the sports app's API for free, but now they always have to have a paid subscription. This costs 10.99 euros per month.

Strava writes that the measures are necessary due to the 'aggressive scraping' of data by AI companies. The company claims that developer applications have increased by 448 percent this year and that scraping attempts have degraded the platform's performance. “The serious patterns of abuse we identified have prompted us to revise our assessment criteria.”

The requirement immediately applies to new developers. Existing developers have until June 30 to subscribe before losing access. Developers who submitted an API request in 2026 can take out a three-month subscription at Strava's expense. The measures have no effect on integration with wearables and other devices.

Developer levels

Strava will also divide developers into two tiers. New app developers with fewer than ten users automatically enter the Standard level. Their app no longer needs to be verified. Developers with 11 to 9999 users must have their app verified and receive higher usage limits. Developers with more than 10,000 users can get into the Extended Access level. Extended Access developers do not need a Strava subscription and also get access to Strava's partner API.

The timing of the measures is not coincidental. At the beginning of this year, Strava filed for an IPO with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The app developer said it will likely want to go public once the regulator has approved the application.

On Reddit, the measure is compared with the adjustments that Reddit implemented in 2023. Strava CEO Michael Martin told TechCrunch that these measures cannot be compared, because Reddit charged developers based on the number of API requests, while Strava charges a fixed monthly rate. “We want users to feel ownership of their data and feel comfortable with the way we manage and secure it. But we also want developers to continue to thrive and grow.”
