Gemini connects to Google Contacts to better leverage your address book

Authors

Gemini is intruding a little more into your life, but it's for your own good, Google tells us. Indeed, Google continues the implementation of Personal Intelligence, its personalization layer based on data from in-house services with the addition of Google Contacts within the connected applications accessible by Gemini.

Here is “Personal Intelligence”: Gemini drives the point home

The integration is available in Gemini Settings, within the Personal Intelligence > Connected Applications section, where a handful of users, at the moment, can now enable support for Google Contacts in addition to the other services already offered. Gemini can already support Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Drive, Keep, Tasks and Chat for business customers, but also search services like Search, Maps, Shopping, News, as well as Google Flights and Hotels, not to mention Google Photos, YouTube and YouTube Music.

Once this connection is established, Gemini obtains authorization to consult the Google address book as well as the contact information saved on the devices associated with the account, while remaining confined to the perimeter defined by the user.

Google indeed insists that Personal Intelligence works on the basis of consent. Thus, data from connected applications is only used when the option is activated and for targeted queries, without being used for general model training.

Currently available in the United States, but soon elsewhere?

According to Google, the functionality is currently aimed at users over 18 years of age, holders of a personal Google account, and mainly Gemini AI Pro or AI Ultra subscribers in the United States, which corresponds to the wave launch logic already applied to other Personal Intelligence bricks.

Also note that Personal Intelligence is still in the beta phase, with a gradual deployment to more countries and, ultimately, to less expensive offers, but the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Nigeria remain excluded from this program for the moment.

Also note that, for the moment, the Contacts integration has only appeared on one of its AI Ultra accounts with Gemini Spark, indicating a launch limited to a small group of users.

Gemini can access your contacts, but what's the point?

Once Google Contacts is activated in Connected Apps, Gemini can therefore behave as a conversational interface for the address book. According to Google, the assistant is thus able to find, add, modify or delete contacts in natural language, whether they are stored in Google Contacts or present among the contacts of the connected device.

For example, we can ask him to find a record by name, number or email address, with queries such as “What is Paul B’s email?” or “Show me Peter’s phone number” without having to open the Contacts app.

It is also possible to use a shortcut with the mention @Contacts to identify the person associated with a given number or check information such as the birthday date recorded for a specific contact.

In terms of file management, Gemini can record a new contact or enrich an existing profile. We can thus imagine voice commands such as “Add Marie T to my contacts with the number 06 12 34 56 78” or “Register Georges’ new address at 57, boulevard de la Hutte in Bordeaux”, which the assistant then translates into structured files in Google Contacts.

In the same way, you can also update contacts to change information in a file. Finally, Gemini can also respond to more complex requests, such as finding recent emails sent by a specific contact or summarizing exchanges, which brings the experience closer to that of a complete personal assistant rather than a simple chatbot.
