Google is sharing the Fitbit Air blueprints so you can 3D print your own accessories.
The company has announced key measures to encourage third-party add-ons.
Google seems to encourage everyone, not just companies or brands, to create their own Fitbit Air accessories. The company has released the tracker's technical specifications along with 2D CAD drawings to help you design an accessory that fits perfectly with the device. The exact measurements of your tracker can be found on the blueprint, along with the important mating dimensions, tolerances and mating force specifications needed to create a proper band.
“We know that your personal style is completely unique. In just a few days, this community has already come up with innovative and creative new ideas to make Fitbit Air yours,” the company announced. Google has listed some important details to keep in mind to keep your device working, including making sure your heart rate and SpO2 sensor trackers are in consistent contact with your skin.
In addition to measurements and other relevant information about the device, Google emphasized the importance of skin-friendly materials to prevent irritation and allergies. Restricted material specifications are listed, including requirements that copper and brass alloys be lead-free and natural latex must not contain allergenic proteins.
Google launched the Fitbit Air for $100 in early May. It's a screen-free health and fitness tracker that's similar to the old Fitbit and could be a serious competitor to Whoop. The device connects to the Google Health app, formerly the Fitbit app, and Gemini-powered Coach, so you can get fitness data and workout suggestions right on your phone. Since its launch, people have been designing their own accessories, such as armbands, and 3D printing them.
