Dutch grid operators have agreed with regulator ACM to make better use of the electricity grid. For example, they will do more to combat grid congestion and offer companies more flexible contracts. Last year, the ACM complained about grid operators who were lagging behind with the new measures.
The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets said at the end of last year that Dutch grid operators were lagging behind in introducing new measures against grid congestion. Due to grid congestion, companies and homes can only be connected to the power grid later. Network operators therefore had to make improvement plans, with which binding agreements have now been made.
All Dutch grid operators therefore promise to gain better insight into how their energy grids are currently being used 'as soon as possible', so that they can make better agreements with customers on this basis. For example, if grid operators see that large companies use a lot of power at certain times, they can agree with those companies that they will spread their power consumption more and use less power at peak times. These companies are compensated for this.
Measures are not the solution
The ACM announced the measures at the end of 2024. They are intended to reduce power consumption at peak times, allowing more homes and businesses to be connected to the existing electricity grid. It is one of the solutions, but not the solution. Vehicle-to-grid, where the car is used as a home battery, is seen as another possible solution, in addition to strengthening the energy grid.
