HKC presents ultra-super megawide monitor: 83.4 inches and 11,520x2160 pixels

At the Computex, HKC is showing a truly gigantic monitor: the C83U60. The approximately two-meter-wide beast has a 48:9 ratio and a resolution of 11,520x2160 pixels. It is not very likely that the mega screen will ever reach stores.

The Chinese panel maker HKC regularly shows something sensational at trade fairs where it is present. Consider a 1080Hz monitor or a mini LED monitor with more than 9000 dimming zones. At Computex this year, the highlight is the C83U60: an 'ultrasuper megawide monitor' with a diagonal of 83.4".

The screen is about the same height as regular 32" monitors with 16:9 ratio, or a 57" superwide with 32:9 ratio. The HKC C83U60 is half as wide as a 57" screen. This gives you a panel of approximately two meters wide in front of you, with an enormous resolution: 11,520x2160 pixels. According to HKC, the screen offers a brightness of 400cd/m² and a DCI-P3 color coverage of 95 percent. There is no more than a refresh rate of 60Hz.

Like the existing 57" screens, the C83U60 has a VA panel, provided with a strong curvature by HKC. As with the Samsung Odyssey Neo G95NC, it is noticeable that the center of the panel is more strongly curved than the edges. Although the ends of the panel on the demo sample are provided with extra supports, according to an employee on the exhibition floor, the monitor does not really need this in the context of its sturdiness.

The employee honestly admits that the C83U60 will probably not actually be sold, mainly because it is difficult to transport the enormous panel. In certain markets the monitor might be sold on a trial basis. The manufacturer believes that this could happen in the fourth quarter of this year. The screen is expected to cost at least $2,000 if it comes to that.
