In Brazil, in the Amazon, there was a prolonged dry season and a change in rainfall patterns.

Two recently published studies show that the Brazilian Amazon region is beginning to experience scenarios that were predicted decades ago, including extended dry seasons and changes in rainfall patterns. In the absence of a response, the situation could deteriorate rapidly, threatening biodiversity, the replenishment of natural reservoirs and forest functions. One study indicates that the dry season in the Amazon region is being extended from four months to six months, during which precipitation has been reduced by more than 150 mm. The second study analysed the drought in the Amazon region between 2023 and 2024. The results show an increase of 9 per cent in the area of excess fire, an increase of 19 per cent in early warning of forest degradation and, at the peak of drought, as many as 4.2 million hectares of forests were affected by fire. The results show that the cycle of drought, fire and degradation is increasing, reducing the resilience of ecosystems. The area of the Amazon rainforest may also be reduced.
