According to information from IT House on 3 June, on the occasion of World Environment Day (5 June of each year), the Ministry of Public Security published today four typical cases of pollution of the environment, in which the public security organs of the city of Shao Xing, Zhejiang province, discovered the case of a person who had made a fraudulent chip to interfere with car tail gas detection.

The IT family learned that in November 2024, the public security organs of the city of Shao Xing, Zhejiang province, discovered a case involving the sale of fraudulent chips to interfere with car tail gas detection to pollute the environment, captured 27 suspects and destroyed 3 criminal gangs.

Suspects have been found to have illegally developed and produced, by a certain individual, power chips with the capability to interfere with motor vehicle emission detection data and to have been sold to multiple motor vehicle detection agencies throughout the country. The chip, through, inter alia, tampering with data from the system, makes it possible to pass an annual inspection of an unqualified vehicle, resulting in the illegal movement of a large number of exhaust over-characterized vehicles, seriously disrupting the market order of motor vehicle emission testing and posing a direct threat to the improvement of regional air quality.

In that case, the suspect had used technical means to conceal the true emission levels of the vehicle, which had led to the release of pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and other pollutants that directly exacerbated the regional haze, ozone, etc. Following the incident, the public security organs, under the auspices of the police coordination mechanism, jointly carried out cross-regional tracing of the ecological environment, market monitoring and so forth, fast-tracking of chip production sites, distribution networks and institutions, and breaking the criminal chain.
