Lego announces 12 Smart Play Pokémon sets
To date, Smart Play sets have been equipped exclusively with Star Wars motifs.
Lego introduces its intelligent technology for the first time into a non-Star Wars product line, with a series of Pokémon sets that will appear later this summer. Overall, there are 12 sets that are all smart play capable in any way.
Legos' collaboration with Pokémon has so far focused on nostalgic builds for long-term fans in the age group of over 18 years old, but the new Smart Play series is similar to the very successful modular Mario series, especially a game for the younger audience. The cheapest of this is only $15.
The most expensive are the two all-in-one sets that contain at least one Smart Brick, a charger and smart tags that tell the Brick how to behave. The Lego Pokémon Smart Play: Glurak vs. Blitzeon Ultimate Battle Set for 120 US Dollars contains an 18 cm Glurak figure and a 12 cm flasheon. Two Smart Bricks, four tags and one charger are included. Every month there is a stone to unlock its unique fighting noises and interactions, while a smart day improved healing spray can restore health during the fight. An interactive target for training is also included.
The other All-in-One set available for launch is the Lego Pokémon Smart Play: Pikachu training house, which costs $70 and comes with a Smart Brick and four Smart Tags. In addition to a figure of the most famous Pokémon of all, you will also receive a “Pikachu-inspired” tree house from bricks, a training destination, a Pokéball and a buildable miniature sandwich. The idea is that the player can channel his inner Ash Ketchum while he “cares, feeds, plays, trains and fights everyone’s most popular electrified rodent.”
The other 10 sets are smaller games around one or more Pokémon, most of them recognizable monsters of the 1st generation. They are quite simple for themselves, but by adding a Smart Brick they become real smart play sets. When a Smart Brick is used, Jigglypuff can use its microphone and speakers, for example, while Bulbasur and Bidoof react to movements. Unfortunately, it looks like Lego is still not selling the Smart Brick individually, which means that you need to buy a set with a Smart Brick before you can use the features in full.
