Since the end of last year Microsoft Announcing a function for teams, allowing the software to automatically identify the location of users and to derive the presence in the office. The introduction of the controversial function has already been postponed. Now Microsoft shifts the release date again, but gives the current month of June as a release period.
This can be found in the updated article in the Microsoft-365 admin center (MC1081568, copy at merill.net). If users are on the move in business WiFi, teams can automatically log them into a building, for example, when the option is introduced. “This makes it easier for users to coordinate work with colleagues and to get in touch with them personally,” explains the company.
concerns about privacy
The function caused heated discussions, as it potentially leverages privacy protection. However, Microsoft makes it clear that the function remains disabled by default with all tenants. Admins must first activate and configure them. Even after that, end users remain in control and can select whether this information is shared with other employees. In addition, the function is to macOS and Windows move in. teams should not update the location if employees connect after official working hours; that can be set within teams or the Outlook calendar. Local entries are also deleted outside working hours.
For example, admins have to assign WLAN BSSIDs to buildings, then employees can use the function if they want it. This should be enough to map special devices like monitors.
