Microsoft Azure. Linux 4.0 Official release of the publicly measured version: from CBL-Mariner, using Fedora as the base structure

News from IT House, June 5, Microsoft announced its launch at the Build 2026 Congress. Azure. Linux 4.0 The first public preview was also released, and users can now experience the Linux release, which was developed specifically for the Azure cloud environment, in advance. AKS and WSL support will be launched soon.

This release is a continuation of the technical route adjustment previously identified by Microsoft. Azure Linux 4.0 has shifted to a Fedora-based construction, which is one of the most important structural changes in the version. Through this adjustment, Azure Linux is closer to Fedora ' s package ecology while retaining Microsoft ' s customized functional layer for the Azure platform.

The central technological change of Azure Linux 4.0 is that Microsoft no longer maintains a relatively independent software package base, but uses the source code of Fedora Linux directly and, on this basis, superimposes customized content for Azure needs. In addition, the release continues to use the RPM package system and maintains a common RPM management tool chain.

Microsoft emphasizes that this is not simply to repackage Fedora, but to maintain complete control over the final package combination, system configuration, security strategy and Azure integration point on the basis of Fedora, leading to a Linux system built around the Azure cloud platform rather than a distribution to community desktops or common servers.

Azure Linux 4.0 is now available through Azure Marketplace, where users who need it can be deployed on the Azure virtual machine and virtual machine size set, for virtual machines, virtual machine size sets, container mirrors and Kubernetes Relevant examples.

Relative to Amazon Similar cloud manufacturers such as Linux, Microsoft focuses on Azure integration, life-cycle management and coherence.

At the same time, Microsoft noted that the official support of Azure Linux 4.0 was limited to the Azure environment. Although users can test relevant mirrors and ISO files in other settings, the release does not support naked machine deployment, other cloud platforms or desktop use.

IT House reminds that the current preview version is for evaluation only and should not be used in the production environment.
