IT House News 3 June, @phantomofEarth found that Microsoft hidden a new feature not mentioned in the update log in the latest Win11 Experiment Preview 26300.8553.
As shown in the figure, an offload option for the AI model appears on the settings page of the latest Win11 Experiment preview, where users can remove associated AI components such as the Phi Silica model directly by simple operation to release hard disk space. @techosarusrex shared screenshot shows that the occupied space of the Phi Silica model alone has exceeded 2.59 GB and that the following is the new unloaded button.
Since the 24H2 version,Windows 11 At the hardware level, there are two categories: conventional PC and what Microsoft officially calls Copilot+ PC (or AI PC), which significantly increases minimum requirements for memory and storage, requires 16GB memory and 256GB hard disk space and requires more than 40 TOPS NPU, much higher than the normal Win11 4GB+64GB requirement. Compared to normal PC, the Copilot+PC contains multiple AI models to support the side AI function.
Phi Silica is a small language model developed by Microsoft, which can be run through a local NPU device and can be used for tasks such as AI text abstract, rewrite and content generation.
In addition to this, the Copilot+PC supports the AI production map, which can generate pictures based on text tips. According to Microsoft, image processing AI components analyse images provided by users, while image conversion AI components serve to edit scenes and support the removal of objects and the re-establishment of intelligent background. With this offload option, the user can remove the unnecessary AI model from the system and keep the required functionality as necessary.
It is worth mentioning that Google Crome Browser also previously built a side AI model into the local hard disk space of about 4GB. Users who need to do so can use changes to the registration form to prevent Chrome from downloading the side AI model, as previously reported by IT House.
