IT House News, June 6th, Infinity Ward just sent a letter detailing a new DMZ model in Mission Call: Modern War 4.
Unlike DMZ, which was introduced in Beta in Modern War II and War Area 2.0 in 2022, the new version of DMZ will return as a complete stand-alone model and further evolve into a “search-and-search” game.
Infinity Ward, the Director of Multiplay Creatives, Geoff Smith, stated that the team had continued to study trends in exit shooting-type games over the past few years and had analysed player preferences and patterns in conjunction with early DMZ testing data. Based on these experiences, the new version of DMZ has been recast from the ground floor.
The new version of DMZ's story was developed by the single-person battle writer team of Modern War 4, and the story ends with the battle model and is directly linked to the modern war world view series. The game stage is set in the demilitarized zone on the Korean peninsula, known as “Hajin”, which has been heavily contaminated by radiation as a result of a nuclear reactor smelting accident, creating a large area of closure.
According to official sources, Hajin is not only a map, but is designed to be an open and functioning sandbox world. Players will face increasingly dangerous AI enemies, environmental puzzles and drama missions. The development team hoped that the model would show the experience of “play in the game”, rather than the third in the non-traditional sense.
Before entering DMZ, the player will first come to the forward base. This is a core hub for the management of equipment, team and readiness. Players will act as undercover operatives employed by the CIA to enter restricted areas to search for and recover critical military technology, while also being wary of other hostile agents.
The Hajin map will be launched in nine major areas, including urban areas, casinos, radiation zones, hospitals, military bases, agricultural land, prisons, radio stations and towns. The main subject of the map is located in the territory of the Republic of Korea, but part of the area extends to the North Korean-Russian border.
Officially, Hajin will use dynamic ecosystem design. Players have access to air transport aircraft and ground convoys. At the same time, maps will be affected by real-time weather systems. In different stations, the player may enter a sunny, stormy, or mist environment, and weather changes will increase or weaken as the game proceeds.
With regard to the mission system, the new version of DMZ offers three main modes of play: Stoy Missions, Dynamic Missions and Free Roam.
As mentioned earlier, the plot was designed by the battle team Modern War 4 to further expand the world view of the game. Dynamic missions generate multiple-stage targets at random; free-exploring models allow players to determine their own course of action and objectives.
The matching mechanism has also been adjusted. If the player turns on the auto-supplier, the system will prioritize the selection of the same task type. For example, in the case of a team that is on a situational mission, the player who is added will also be targeted at the situational task, thus reducing the probability of a member of the team leaving midway.
However, the entire world of DMZ still adheres to the principle of “one world, one time”. While teams will be matched by mission type, other players on the map may be implementing completely different objectives, so that they may be exposed at any time to other teams carrying out the drama, dynamic tasks or free exploration.
Infinity Ward summed up the concept of the core design of DMZ as "The Player Drives the World, the World will affect the Player." The vehicle fleet, air supply and special incidents on the map can be challenging targets, but players can choose whether to intervene or not. The official will also be included in a silo system to allow players to avoid triggering alarms or actively disengaged from part of a dynamic event.
In addition to NPC, the confrontation between players has become an important component of DMZ. As the number and prestige of players rise, their role may be systematically marked as a reward target. After being defeated, the player will fall off the identity card and other players will take it out of the restricted area in exchange for a reward. The bounty hunter can also purchase intelligence targeting players, with an overall mechanism similar to the reward system in Mission Call: A War Zone.
The growth system is one of the biggest differences between the new version of DMZ and the traditional multi-person model. Officially, DMZ uses a role growth system like Operation Black 7 Endgame. Each player has an independent skill tree, and players can develop multiple roles based on different play practices.
When the character dies in DMZ, its current equipment will be completely lost and the role will become “MIA”. If the player wishes to re-energize the role, it will have to pay a certain amount of money in the game, which will be determined by the level of growth of the role and the performance of the player. This semi-permanent death mechanism means that the risk to players in each operation will increase significantly.
The development team also confirmed that DMZ had a fully independent growth system and that its progress would not be shared with other forms of Mission Call.
Mission Call: Modern War 4 is expected to land on October 23, 2026 Xbox Series X|S, PC (Warnet, Steam), PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 platform.
Unlike the previous free-test version, DMZ will not be introduced as a free-of-charge version of War Area, and players need to buy Modern War 4 to experience the model.
The IT House reminds the government of its commitment not to join the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass services for at least one year for the sale of Modern War 4.
From the information currently published, the Infinity Ward is trying to create a new version of DMZ as a major long-term operating model for integration drama, PvPvE confrontation, survival evacuation, role formation and dynamic world system, and as an important basis for the future mission call to evacuate shooting.
