NASA bass blast ultrasonic aircraft X-59 will try to break the sound speed for the first time.
NASA announced that the X-59 Quess bass ultrasonic plane, designed by the Lockheed Martin skunk factory, would try to break the sound speed for the first time this month. The X-59 design, which can break the sound speed without the sound explosion normally occurring in an ultrasonic aircraft, produces a more quiet “bong bang” similar to the sound of closing doors in the room. It does not go forward to the windows, but rather provides the pilot with a realistic, off-site visual system in front of the aircraft through cameras and monitors. If X-59 succeeds, it is expected to have a revolutionary impact on ultrasonic flights and the aviation industry, lifting the current restrictions on ultrasonic flights. X-59 completed its first flight in October 2025, conducted 14 test flights since March 2026, and achieved 1.4 MHz at an altitude of 16.7 km planned for this month.
