Nintendo Switch 2 EU: Nintendo confirms the launch of a special model for Europe

Authors

A model that the whole world envies? Having remained a rumor for a long time, the new Nintendo Switch 2 model will indeed be launched in Europe in the coming months.

This is in fact a compliance with the new European regulation. It made headlines regarding smartphones, but it applies to all portable electronic devices, such as the Nintendo Switch 2.

An important change

This is therefore a new model of Nintendo Switch 2 which will comply with the new European regulations. Nintendo announces it on its site:

In addition, the regulation provides that from February 18, 2027, batteries integrated into certain devices and sold in the European Union must be able to be easily replaced by end users at any time during the life of the product. Nintendo is implementing measures to comply with these requirements by developing versions of its products that comply with the regulations.

The brand has not yet revealed how the design of the Nintendo Switch 2 will be modified to comply.

Remember that European regulations do not require brands to offer a removable battery, but rather a battery that can be easily replaced with conventional tools. So it’s not the return of covers on the back of consoles or AA batteries.

Today, the Nintendo Switch 2 is not designed for simple battery changes. The specialized site iFixit describes a 34-step process which notably involves softening adhesives, using solvent, or even removing JIS screws requiring a very specific screwdriver.

Nintendo also does not specify whether this compliance is being done for the Nintendo Switch 2 worldwide, or only for copies marketed in the European Union.

How to recognize the new model?

Currently released Nintendo Switch 2 models have a model number starting with “BEE”.

New Nintendo Switch 2 models complying with EU regulations in 2027 will carry a new model number as well as an “OSM” code on the packaging to recognize them.

Nintendo could take the opportunity to make other changes to the Nintendo Switch 2, but you will have to wait until you have the console in your hands to find out.
