IT House News of June 4th, at a business-oriented event on Tuesday, local time,OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman talks about the biggest users of the company token.
Altman revealed that six and a half years ago, the OpenAI internal head word consumer consumed 100,000 words a month, when “almost global word consumed the first person”.
"Now, six and a half years later, this consumption has almost become a global per capita use, and Altman says, "And now, the lingo-consumption champion within OpenAI, about 100 billion words a month."
This, however, is not yet the highest global consumption. According to Altman, the company found an external user with a more expensive dictionary, a matter that he found in private embarrassing.
It's already become the internal style of OpenAI. It is known that there is a hype consumption ranking within the company, and that employees often display their own high usage records on social platform X to show off; of course, OpenAI itself is a word seller, which objectively fuels such consumption.
There are more examples of amazing staff consumption: a screenshot by Peter Steinberger, the developer of OpenClaw, shows that 60.3 billion words were consumed in 30 days; the New York Times also reported that an OpenAi employee used 210 billion words a week.
IT House noted that while OpenAI allowed for internal big word consumption, other businesses were strictly controlling their expenses. Following the closure of the internal terminological consumption list in Amazonia and the statement by the Uber Chief Operator that the related expenditure value was a concern, the company also introduced a terminological use limit.
According to Altman, OpenAI continues to optimize self-study models over time, while exploring a variety of downside efficiency options that seek to “create higher value at lower cost”.
He also mentioned that AI costs had suddenly surfaced. At the beginning of 2026, “no one cared about the cost and was fully satisfied with the level of consumption at the time”. But today, AI's use costs have become a major challenge.
