A statement by Prime Minister Carney for his contribution to Canada by Mary Simon

“We thank Her Excellency Mary Simon for her service and dedication to our country as she prepares to complete her term as Governor of Canada. Her lifelong leadership, advocacy and hard work have made Canada a stronger, more just and inclusive country.

As Canada ' s first First Nations Governor and Commander-in-Chief, Mary Simon reminds us that reconciliation is not a project with an end date, but a responsibility for how we listen, how to learn and how to act day after day. Throughout her service, she has demonstrated this responsibility with wisdom, compassion and unswerving objectives.

During the recent two-year mental health study and listening tour, Mary Simon articulated the mental health needs of northern and aboriginal communities. She brings to light those challenges that are often neglected and gives dignity to those who are often neglected. To commemorate her legacy and continue her beloved work, the Ridohol Foundation is launching Ajuinnata: Mary Simon Mental Health Catalyst. This new project will provide life-saving support to Northern and First Nations communities, such as counselling, culture-based services and peer-led mental health care.

In honour of your contribution to Canada, the Federal Government initially invested $5 million to establish the project. In addition, we'll match every dollar raised by the Rideau Hall Foundation, up to $10 million. We are proud to be able to build on the work done by Mary Simon throughout her life, the foundation of a strong nation.

Your legacy will continue not only in her service, but also in her service — her grace, determination and great faith in Canada.
