Summer Game Fest 2026: All news from the busiest gaming week

Authors

Get ready for some gaming news. It's officially June, which means some spectacular new events from PlayStation, Xbox and gaming hype man Geoff Keighley, plus a bunch of smaller events with hidden gems.

Summer Game Fest 2026: All the news from the busiest week in gaming

PlayStation kicked things off with a big event that featured a new look at Wolverine ahead of its September launch, an announcement of Control Resonant's September release date, and an extended reveal of a brand new God of War title. The show was primarily about premium single-player games – a statement from PlayStation that it's getting back to what it's good at.

At Summer Game Fest Live on Friday, the biggest news was Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third and final game in the FFVII Remake trilogy. But we also got announcements of a Resident Evil: Code Veronica remake, a January 15 release date – and a Tupac casting announcement – for Stranger Than Heaven from RGG Studio, and new Cuphead titles from Studio MDHR.

The big Xbox show takes place on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. But one of the biggest storylines in the series so far has been everyone avoiding Grand Theft Auto VI's November 19 release date, which skews the release schedule. And this year’s events are taking place at a difficult time for the industry. Prices of consoles and gaming hardware have skyrocketed, with all three major console players announcing price hikes and handheld manufacturers also increasing hardware costs.

Here we'll be tracking the biggest news from the June gaming event season.

Each year at Summer Game Fest, nestled between the blockbuster showcases, the Wholesome Direct offers a nice change of pace. It's also full of games – this year's edition had more than 50 – but the atmosphere is more relaxed and, well, healthy. Like previous years, I've posted some of the more intriguing reveals and announcements, although you can watch it all for yourself here. And if you want to check out some games – a few are available now and several have demos – there's a dedicated Steam page.

In 2017, Hidden Folks helped usher in a new genre of search and discovery games – and now it has a sequel. There aren't many details yet, but Hidden Folks 2 will feature "interactive, hand-drawn miniature landscapes in various new themes, as well as sillier jokes, more mouth noises, and various quality of life improvements." It will be launched in 2027 on mobile and PC.

Read the article >- Yooka-Laylee is back as a kart game.

Super Yooka-Laylee Kart feels like a love letter to an older generation of the karting genre. But it also has some modern improvements, like eight-player local split-screen and rollback netcode for online racing. There will also be a “deep” story campaign – perhaps it will rival Diddy Kong Racing?

- Wait, Tupac was in a Summer Game Fest Live trailer? In 2026?

Yes, and he wasn't the only deceased character to make an appearance in the "Tupac & Cast Reveal Trailer" at last night's event. It also featured the portrait of Bunta Sugawara, a legendary Japanese actor who died in 2014.

Stranger Than Heaven, from Yakuza developer RGG Studio, highlighted Snoop Dogg as an actor in a trailer last month, and there's plenty of time for more reveals before its planned 2027 release.

- The original Hitman trilogy is being remastered.

Hitman Classic Trilogy Remastered will include updated versions of Hitman: Codename 47, Hitman 2: Silent Assassin and Hitman: Contracts for modern platforms. It is expected to launch on PS5, Xbox Series

- Monster Hunter Wilds is coming to Switch 2.

- A pleasant interruption.

- Get your knives out for this one.

The team behind Duck Detective has announced what they're describing as a Knives Out-inspired mystery, and that's really all I need to hear to be curious about Apple Crumble. It will launch on PC this year.

- I know Threads of Time isn't recently announced, but it looks so cool.

I just introduced my 9-year-old to Chrono Trigger, perhaps my favorite game of all time, and this love letter (and to other JRPGs of the era) hits home perfectly. I might be as excited for this one as FFVII Revelation.

In 2015, the two-person studio Metanet released N++, a brutally hard 2D platformer that was a decade in the making, building on previous releases dating back to the free-to-play title Flash N. At the time, co-founder Raigan Burns uttered some famous last words: "We hope it won't be another 10 years before we have a game." But now here we are, over a decade later, and N is getting another sequel. And this time the focus is on multiplayer.

The new game is called, absurdly, N Plus Infinity Times Two. While N++ was meant to be the ultimate single-player version of the N concept, this game is described as "the ultimate virtual couch board game with a low skill level and no skill ceiling." That means the same trick, acrobatic platforming action and stunning graphic design-inspired visuals, but now built around playing competitively or cooperatively with friends in a handful of different modes. It will be launched on PS5, Xbox, Switch 2 and PC in 2027.

Read the article >- Fortnite's next season tests the mining waters.

In Fortnite: Runners, you can search for cute little sprites that give you powers, and if you mine them before a match ends, you can spend special currency to start the next match with a sprite equipped. It's no surprise that Fortnite would attempt mining, considering the rise of games like Arc Raiders and Marathon.

Runners, which should be playable later tonight, will also feature a comic book-style John Wick.

- A damn good announcement.

The studio behind cult classics Nidhogg and Wheel World is back with Blood Dungeon, a game described as a "2D platform auto-shooter with a killer soundtrack." Best of all, it's coming out very soon and launching this summer.

Who's afraid of the next GTA? Based on the last few days of Summer Game Fest, just about everyone. Grand Theft Auto VI wasn't present at any of the main events, but its presence was felt every time a release date was announced. The month of November, when GTA VI launches, is practically empty. The rest of the fall, meanwhile, is absolutely busy.

It started on Tuesday during Sony's State of Play showcase. Even before this show, we knew that Wolverine, the next big PlayStation exclusive, would launch on September 15th. But now it's joined by a bunch of major third-party titles: Dune: Awakening (September 22), Control Resonant (September 24), Silent Hill: Townfall (September 24), Onimusha: Way of the Sword (September 25), and Ace Combat 8 (October 2). This is in addition to other games launched before November and already announced, such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 in October.

Read the article >Square Enix has officially announced the third and final game in its Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy: Final Fantasy VII Revelation. It will be released simultaneously on multiple platforms – PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2 – in spring 2027.

In the footage shown on stage at Summer Game Fest Live, there was a lot to see: you'll be able to pilot the Highwind airship, jump from it to land in the game's open world, play as Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind in battle (which weren't playable in Rebirth), challenge the gigantic weapons, and visit locations from the original game, like Wutai. You'll also be able to dress your characters in armor with special moves, in what's actually called the "FITS" system ("Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear") - it's intended to resemble a task system from classic Final Fantasy games.

Read the article >- Tifa can kick Ryu's ass, and now you can prove it.

The next batch of Street Fighter 6 characters includes a favorite from Final Fantasy VII. The four new fighters will be released in stages, with Tifa dropping early next year.

- The Wolf Among Us 2 is not dead yet.

- For those following at home…

By my count, we're at four (4) puppet or puppet-adjacent appearances so far in the series: Studio MDHR, Billy the Puppet from Saw, the Among Us mascots, and then the Capcom figures. We know Geoff loves puppets, but I'm excited about how much he's devoted himself to them this year.

- Attack on Titan in its entirety.

If you liked Omega Force and Koei Tecmo's 2016 hack-and-slash version of Attack on Titan Season 1 (or Attack on Titan 2, which adapted the first two seasons), good news! They're back with Attack on Titan 3, and this time the game covers the anime in its entirety. It will be released on July 1 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2.

- Another look at Clutch.

- We have to go a little quickly.

Sonic and his friends seem to have their own adorable Pico Park game. Many new crossovers are also coming to Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, including TMNT and Godzilla.

- There is a surprise among us.

If you're wondering what happened to the Among Us animated series announced in 2023, wonder no more: all 10 episodes of the series are available to stream now on Paramount Plus. Another surprise: developer Innersloth has announced a spin-off titled Among Us Story: On Guard.

- A new hope.

Star Wars may be having a tough time at the box office right now, but it might have better luck in the world of strategy games. XCOM-like Star Wars Zero Company launches on August 27 for PS5, Xbox, and PC.
