Tenebris Somnia adds on 16. October Add a Retro-Survival Game Live Action-Horror

Airdorf and Andrés Borghi create a nightmare with two terrorist styles.

Tenebris Somnia is a retro-Survival-Horror game with a terrifying twist: The intermediate sequences are live action pieces created by an expert for disturbing cinema. Tenebris Somnia is expected to appear on PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, Switch, Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S on October 16, as announced during the summer showcase “Day of the Devs”. So enough time remains to adjust your Halloween costume.

The core of Tenebris Somnia plays in a world full of schroffer, from the 90s inspired 2D graphics, which makes the sudden change to the real film even more effective. They play a young Argentinean woman named Julia, who is trapped in a nightmare full of evil monsters and jealous horrors and fight, flee, solve puzzles and manage consumables to escape. In terms of mood, Tenebris Somnia is inspired by Survival-Horror classics like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, but has its own duel art styles.

The game comes from the Indie team Saibot Studios and is staged by Andrés Borghi, who is known in my house for the visual effects in “When Evil Lurks”, one of the best horror films of recent years. In addition to his work as a producer of visual effects in films, Borghi is a multimedia creator and director and worked with Saibot at the fighting game The Black Heart from 2021.

In addition, Airdorf (original name Mason Smith) is the executive producer of Tenebris Somnia, the creator of the celebrated retro-horror series Faith: The Unholy Trinity. The Faith publisher New Blood Interactive also takes care of Tenebris Somnia, and New Blood is responsible for bringing Airdorf and Borghi together. In the presentation “Day of the Devs” Dave Oshry, co-founder of New Blood, explained that he brought the creators into contact because he knew that Borghi was a fan of Airdorf. He didn't know the admiration was based on reciprocity.

“Andrés was the director of one of my favorite horror films, Alexia,” said Airdorf. “And so I was really excited, I immediately said yes. I didn't prepare it at that time, but I think it was just this strange, evil turn of fate that we can work together now."

As we can see in the trailers and the Steam Demo to Tenebris Somnia, both visual approaches are extremely successful both individually and in interaction. The game has vivid and detailed pixel art as well as stabbed sharp live action recordings of hellish beasts and bleeding pointed teeth, and the shock when changing is part of the charm. The film scenes are less cheesy and more intrusive, which I think happens when you work with an award-winning team for special film effects.

In principle, I would like to say that Tenebris Somnia looks fantastic and finally has a release date on time for the horror season. The fact that it appears on a variety of platforms – Steam, GOG and consoles of the current and past generation – is just a bonus.
