According to news reports from IT House on June 7, journalists today (7 days) have learned from the National Energy Group that, for the first time, the country ' s autonomous development of hydrogen-fired technologies has achieved 50 per cent of the HYP and 100 per cent of pure hydrogen combustion, marking a major breakthrough in our clean, low-carbon hydrogen-fired technology.

It was described that the technology was built from hydrogen gas to the oven using a fully autonomous hydrogen coal-fired low nitrogen burner. The burning of a full-process safety protection system that allows hydrogen to be fully mixed with coal powder to burn in the boiler and achieves a 50% calorie ratio of mixed hydrogen combustion on the test device. This means that coal-savings can be reduced by up to 50 per cent in the case of HYP, and effective control over NOx generation is achieved.

It has been reported that our country has the largest coal-fired unit in the world, and that the green and low-carbon transformation of the coal-fired sector is of great relevance to the achievement of the “two carbon” goal. This outcome confirms a promising technological path for our future coal-fired fleet to achieve significant carbon emission reductions and is important for the green and low-carbon transformation of our coal-fired power and for the integration of coal-fired power with new energy sources.

The National Energy Group, known as the National Energy Investment Group Limited Corporation, was formed in 2017 by a merger of the State of Origin Power Group and the Shinhua Group, and is the world ' s largest coal production company, the Fire Power Company, the Wind Power Company and the Coal Oil Coal Chemical Corporation.

In March 2024, the National Energy Agency issued its Energy Work Guide 2024, which explicitly provides for the in-depth exploration of pyrotechnic hydrogen and ammonia technologies. In the same year, the Commission also included in its draft opinion on the list of advanced green low-carbon technology demonstration projects (first set) a demonstration project on evidence of a new “electric-hydrogen-electric” model based on the innovation of pure hydrogen gas turbines.

Hydrogen gas storage is one of the key challenges for industrial development and is currently dominated by high-pressure gas, liquid and carrier storage. In September 2025, the demonstration application and stable operation of the core equipment of 5 tons/single hydrogen extraction equipment developed by the Institute of Scientific Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences marked the country ' s autonomous research and development capability for large-scale, efficient liquid hydrogen plants, which supported the commercialization of hydrogen energy.

According to the outlook report released by the Global Energy Internet Development Cooperation Organization in 2024, the share of hydrogen gas turbines installed in the country ' s total electric power plant is expected to reach 1.3 per cent by 2050; by 2060, the share is expected to increase to 2.5 per cent.
