The first of Spain's HalconI Typhoon fighters is offline: speed exceeding 2 Mah

Authors

According to information from IT House on 2 June, on Monday, local time, the passengers announced that the first Typhoon Fighter planned by the Spanish Halcon I was offline at the Getafe plant near Madrid and was now ready for engine testing and first flight.

This type of Typhoon fighter aircraft was described as the latest version of the fourth batch of the series (Tranche 4) and as the first of the 20 purchase orders signed by Spain in June 2022, with a cross-escalation of power and weapons systems compared to the early model of Spanish service since 2003. Delivery is scheduled to begin in 2026, with the first three aircraft expected to be on board in the course of the year.

The aircraft can have a maximum speed of 2.0 MHz, approximately 2495 kilometres per hour. Since 2003, the Hettafa factory, located some 15 kilometres south of Madrid, has been responsible for the assembly, testing and delivery of every Typhoon fighter aircraft for Spain.

The core upgrade of the group was the E-Scan radar, the Active Electronic Scan Array (AESA) system. Unlike old radars, AESA systems control radar beams electronically through a large number of launch/receiving modules. This enabled the aircraft to track multiple targets at the same time, to switch rapidly between air-to-air and air-to-ground missions and to reduce the probability of detection by the enemy ' s electronic system. The radar can also carry out electronic attacks on enemy sensors, thereby assuming roles outside the traditional combat aircraft mission.

The new Spanish aircraft will be equipped with a Meteor air missile, with a range of more than 100 kilometres, which is far further from the MRAM missile used by the old typhoon. In addition, the new aircraft will be equipped with a Brimstone III precision guided missile for use in an attack on the ground.

The Halcon I aircraft will replace the ageing F-18 Bumblebee fighter aircraft of the Spanish Air Force at the Gando Air Force Base in the Canary Islands.

Spain has expanded its long-term investment in the Typhoon Fighter Project. In December 2024, Spain signed a second contract for the purchase of 25 additional aircraft through the Halcon II plan. With two orders, Spain has purchased 45 typhoons since 2022. The size of the Spanish Air Force Typhoon fleet will reach 115 after delivery. Halcon II aircraft will be configured in the same configuration as Halcon I, including advanced E-Scan radar, meteor missile support and enhanced data chain capabilities.

The fourth batch also upgraded the module monitors, the electronic warfare system and made it compatible with current and future Typhoon Combater weapons. The plane carries two Eurojet EJ200 engines each with an increase of approximately 20230 pounds. The two engines provided the Typhoon's critical supercruise capability, which is to fly at ultrasonic speeds without the start-up of an increased combustion chamber, thus saving fuel and extending the flight range.
