According to news from IT House 5 June, according to the co-founder, Japan's Minister of Economy, Industry and Development, Akazawa Zhengzheng, at a press conference following the Cabinet meeting today, the Government has provided additional funding of 150 billion yen (IT House Note: the current exchange rate is about 63.6 billion yuan) to the company Rapidus, which is seeking to achieve the nationalization of cutting-edge semiconductors.
Akazawa stated: “This is a key project for the Government to promote growth-oriented investment, and it is in the national interest to ensure success”.
The purpose of the fund was to invest in equipment for the production of 2 nanoscale products, as well as to develop more efficient 1.4 nanoscales.
It has been learned that the newly acquired shares do not have voting rights to ensure that Rapidus is able to make business decisions quickly and that the share of government-owned voting rights will be contained at 11.5 per cent. If, for example, business deterioration occurs, the shares without voting rights are converted to those with voting rights, increasing the percentage of voting rights to approximately 60 per cent.

Rabidus is a semiconductor company co-financed in 2022 by eight large Japanese enterprises, such as Toyota, Sony, Soft Silver, Xinjiang, Japanese electrics, Japanese electrics, Japanese telecommunications telephones and Mitsubishi UFJ Bank, which aims to develop 2 nanoprocess technologies and nationalize advanced semiconductors.
Before receiving this additional funding, Rapidus had received multiple rounds of funding support from the Government of Japan and its institutions. In November 2022, the Government of Japan announced a 70 billion yen subsidy for Rapidus. In October 2024, the Government of Japan planned to participate directly in Rapidus in kind. In February 2025, the Japanese Government planned to contribute 100 billion yen to Rapidus in the second half of the year. In June 2025, Rapidus received additional support of up to JPY 802.5 billion from the Japanese Government in 2025, while the government discussed funding of JPY 100 billion through government agencies.
The funding needs of Rapidus are enormous. It is estimated that the testing of 2 nanochips would require approximately 2 trillion yen, while the volume would require about 3 trillion yen in size. As of the end of March 2025, private funding was only 7.3 billion yen, largely dependent on government support. The company plans to achieve antenatal levels by 2027, and will also need to raise significant funds and actively solicit orders and investments from potential clients such as Fujito and Honda.
