Three Ebola vaccines are under development.
The International Aids Vacccine Initiative (IAVI), Oxford University and Moderna are developing a vaccine against Ebola. The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to IAVI, is likely to be the most serious to date. The epidemic occurred in conflict zones and over a thousand suspected cases have been reported and nine cases have been diagnosed in neighbouring Uganda. There are six known Ebola strains, only three of which can cause an outbreak. The most common drug strain in Zaire has been targeted, but the outbreak is a relatively rare Bundibugyo strain for which there is no vaccine available. Moderna announced that it would use MRNA technology to develop a vaccine against the Bundibugyo strain.
