President Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday to give the government a chance to review powerful AI models before they are released.
The order requires certain AI companies to voluntarily submit new models to the government for testing or evaluation 30 days before making their products available to the public. A previous draft order called for a voluntary review up to 90 days in advance, but AI industry officials had called for a period closer to two weeks.
Trump was scheduled to sign a tougher version of the order in late May, but it was delayed due to pushback from industry, including venture capitalist and former White House AI czar David Sacks. The president said at the time that he didn't want to do anything to impede the way AI companies are leading the way against China.
“Nothing in this section shall be construed to authorize the creation of mandatory government licenses, prior approvals, or permission requirements for the development, publication, release, or distribution of new AI models, including frontier models,” the order issued Tuesday reads.
President Trump had planned to sign the EO in the presence of Silicon Valley CEOs, but ended up signing the current version privately.
In addition to the voluntary review of government AI models, the EO directs the Department of Justice to address crimes such as AI-assisted hacking and unauthorized access as a priority area of coverage.
This is not the president’s first EO on AI. Last December, Trump signed an order directing the development of a national AI policy framework, “a rulebook” to preempt state AI laws.
