According to information from IT House 3 June, Futurism local time 31 May, the second largest American teacher union, the American Teachers Union, launched a major initiative calling on schools to ban the AI system from primary school classes and to keep hardware equipment such as iPad away from younger students.
The President of the United States Teachers Federation, Randy Wingaten, spoke at the National Press Club and made 10 requests, at the heart of which was the reaffirmation that teaching should be human-led. One of the most important is the immediate prohibition of the AI system from entering primary school.
The U.S. Teachers Federation also argued that pre-school to second grade students should be banned from using screens and that students under 16 should not use accompanying chat robots. The speed with which chat robots are being introduced in schools is already a source of concern for the American Teachers ' Federation.
In an interview with The New York Times, Wingaten said: “If we cannot make this matter clear from an educational point of view, I fear that we will lose a generation of children. Teaching and learning in the lower grades should not be done by AI.”
In his speech, Wingaten also stressed that this was not about launching some kind of fanatical “judicile”: “This is not about requiring a total ban on AI, or about burning Chromebook, but about seeking the right balance and reducing harm while taking advantage of technological advantages.”
According to IT House, a year-long study at the Brookings Institution ' s Global Education Centre found that AI ' s access to educational scenes could pose significant risks to children ' s cognitive and social development. Meanwhile, more and more children are replacing their real friends with AI chat robots.
