Rhino Linux It is a dramatic change.
The distribution will soon add a new UI focused on the convergence.
You can download snapshots of new builds, but it is not available on a daily basis.
I am a fan of Rhino Linux for a while. I believe this is called a Swiss Army Knife for Linux distribution and provides the best part of the Xfce desktop. A beautiful distribution that anyone can use regardless of the skill level.
However, there is a significant change in distribution, and if the situation goes well, it is possible to increase to new heights.
These changes include convergence.
So I returned to the concept that bridges desktop and mobile devices.
Let's go on a memorable journey.
For years, Canonical (the company that developed Ubuntu) had a dream of integrating desktop and mobile devices. They called "Convergence" to realize it first.
The idea was simple. When you connect your phone to a monitor/keyboard/mouse, the mobile UI is displayed only on the connected monitor in the desktop format. genius For that reason, they migrated Ubuntu from GNOME desktop to internal Unity desktop. It was beautiful and has provided some of the most advanced features ever seen on the desktop.
Unfortunately, it was not intended. I think the biggest ルdle that Canonical faced was hardware. The only OEM to bet on Unity and Convergence was an unfamiliar company to produce low-end devices. I was one of the few that I received the test device, but it was。ible. The mobile version of Unity failed.
Soon, Canonical abandoned the concept of convergence, returning to the GNOME desktop, and continuing the previous road with the least resistance.
When you look at the present, some companies can use the convergence idea. Samsung Google Map Both have a great deal on the fusion of mobile and desktop, and it’s hard to win.
However, I think that there is a method where there is a will, and the developers of Rhino Linux have both.
Elgo...Rommy.
What is ROMMY?
Lomiri is a Unity version of Rhino Linux. Basically, what developers did is to create a Rhino Linux desktop after Unity. They plan to resume from where Canonical was interrupted.
Rh, developers released the latest version of Rhino Linux with Lomiri desktop. As soon as I started with a live instance, I returned to the mood of Unity. Install distribution to see how it works. This is my reaction.
ROMMY: Good or Bad or Ugly
First, this is a snapshot, so there is a bug incomplete. I didn’t think this version would be available because I knew this was introduced. Lomiri Desktop is far from the finished product, so it is assumed to be useful for use.
The app will open, but the size will be changed automatically until you cannot access or use it. It was a small black box that basically does not work because it was not able to access the title bar and move the app.
You can access and use some apps (e.g. system settings or magshots), and the app such asbrereOffice Writer has been opened, but there is no part of the toolbar and the app is no longer available. The menu of the app didn’t work.
When you look into the System Settings app, you can see that it is focused on your mobile device because the 回転 mode and rotation lock are in front and center. On desktop, these two things are unrelated.
Again, this is a snapshot, so it is in a very early stage of the development process.
omiaking of good things, the Lomiri desktop is very similar to Unity. The display is similar to the one in Ubuntu desktop with side panel and top bar. The Lomiri menu is quite basic and reminds the mobile app drawer than the actual desktop menu. Unit the Unity menu (highly configurable and equipped with one of the most powerful search features on the market), the Lomiri menu has no options. Find the app you want to open it and launch the app.
This is somewhat unfortunate, but this may be the right direction because the original Unity menu was too advanced for the average user. It is very simple.
Rhino Linux’s Xfce approach is great, but the Lomiri desktop shows that developers are working on in。 the same aesthetics into a new iteration. It is not so elegant, but it may be.
[System Settings] > [Background and Appearance] can be installed in dark mode, but I like this very much. The only problem in Light mode is that it is a little different because the general icon (top left) is not switched.
Longer
As I said, I was a snapshot that I tested, so it was expected to have a problem. However, it is clear that there is a long way until Lomiri is released. There is no clear way to set up peri al devices (e.g. printers), and there are few customization methods, and no specific operation (e.g., right-click on desktop).
That said, the Rhino Linux developer’s efforts will be praised. I want to know that Canonical was not able to accomplish, but that success depends on whether it can work on a hardware that can run the mobile version of Rhino Linux (and Lomiri UI). If you fall into the same as Canonical (optionally low-end mobile hardware only), the integration of Rhino Linux will not succeed. On the other hand, if you can run this OS from the latest mid-end to high-end mobile devices (e.g., Pixel or Samsung phone), you might get a big hit.
It is recommended to test it only if you understand that the Lomiri version of Rhino Linux is not a product currently working. If you still don’t have a problem, download ISO, use it to create a live USB drive and launch it to see what appears.
