Using your Whoop bracelet without a subscription is the goal of this open source application project

Both a pioneer and market leader in screenless connected bracelets, Whoop is however threatened by the emergence of several competitors in recent months. Thus, Amazfit launched its Helio Strap, Polar its Loop bracelet and Google its Fitbit Air. Three devices which, unlike Whoop, do not require a subscription to be used and to consult health and activity data on the mobile application.

It must be said that Whoop's economic model is based exclusively on subscription. You do not buy the bracelet, but you subscribe to a package of 199 to 399 euros per year (depending on the bracelet model). Without this subscription, it is impossible to launch the application, consult your health scores or even access your own physiological data.

An application to access Whoop data without paying

It is to fight against this software lock that the Goose project was launched. Spotted by Android Authority, this is an open source application project that would allow you to consult the data from your Whoop bracelet in another freely accessible application, without requiring a subscription.

Still in the development phase, the application nevertheless has the merit of working, although not being perfectly fluid and aesthetic:

Alpha proof of concept. This version is intended for developers to evaluate whether a project of this scale is viable. It is not yet ready to be used as a personal health data tracking application.

The project's Github page also indicates that only Whoop 5.0 is currently supported and that the other models – whether Whoop 4.0 or Whoop MG – are not yet supported. For the moment, the project is only aimed at Whoop users with an iPhone and not on an Android smartphone.

Note also that the project could easily be targeted by Whoop as infringing its intellectual property. We know that the American brand has an easy legal trigger and has not hesitated, in the past, to take its competitors to court.
