Microsoft is releasing a feature for Windows to restrict access to files and folders from AI agents. As a result, they can no longer delete arbitrary files. Microsoft Execution Containers, MXC, will be released later this year.
MXC can isolate the process or session, but also spin up a small VM to let the AI agent do work, Microsoft says. This allows users, as well as companies, to enforce that AI agents only have access to certain folders and not the rest. MXC should become a sandbox for AI agents, Microsoft reasons.
The company announced this at its own developer conference Build. OpenClaw, the most popular application for building AI agents, among others, supports MXC in a preview version. The function itself can now also be tested and should be available in Windows later this year.
