YouTube Picture-in-Picture Mode Rolling Out to All Users Worldwide
YouTube's picture-in-picture mode for Android and iOS is now available to all users worldwide, including those who don't pay for a Premium subscription. The YouTube team says the feature will appear in more and more user accounts over the coming months, so it might take a while to reach most people's accounts. But once they receive it, they will be able to minimize the YouTube video they are playing and continue watching it even after leaving the app. To enable the feature, they simply swipe up or press the home button to close YouTube. The video will continue to play on a mini-player that they can move around on their screen.
The feature first became available on Android and iOS for Premium subscribers in the United States in 2018 and 2021, respectively, before everyone in the country had access to it. On the feature's support page, the YouTube team states that there will be no changes to the experience for users in the United States. Everyone will have access to picture-in-picture for long-form, non-music content on Android and iOS. Premium subscribers benefit from an additional benefit: the ability to use picture-in-picture for both music and non-music content.
